New technologies
Novartis is actively working with European regulators to advance the methodology and science of pharmacovigilance. We participate in the European Innovative Medicines Initiative, which seeks to answer an important question: what can companies and regulators do - technically and scientifically - to identify undiscovered properties of products early in development, even prior to use in the marketplace?
Advances in technology offer promise for further ensuring patient safety. For instance, Novartis has designed software for use throughout development of new therapies to detect potential safety concerns, so-called safety signals, automatically. This software complements reviews by our medical affairs experts.
In another initiative, Novartis researchers and others are examining how advances in genomics - genetic signatures that indicate risks on an individual patient basis - can better identify new mechanisms of action and predict potential safety issues earlier and more precisely.
We believe basic safety advances should be available to everyone, so we are sharing the information we develop with others in industry and with regulators. We keep the safety of patients and our responsibilities to society at the core of all our efforts.
