Clinical trial information

Novartis has been at the forefront in creating greater availability and awareness of clinical trial information, through its own operations and its leadership in industry efforts.

In 2003, we developed our first online clinical trial registry, well before the global pharmaceutical industry agreed to do so. We also initiated our own clinical trial results database on a dedicated website, and we continue to work to expand the scope of information available on the site. We have gone beyond industry-wide practices by posting results within a year after the final patient has been evaluated in a trial - whether or not the trial has led to an approved product, and no matter what the outcome of the trial.

In 2005, Daniel Vasella, Chairman and CEO of Novartis, led industry efforts to create the first worldwide trial registry portal when he served as president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA). Today, that portal allows patients to easily search for online information about more than 250 000 clinical trials worldwide - details on trials underway, as well as results of those completed. In 2006, additional search tools were added to the IFPMA portal, including the ability to search in five languages. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also implemented an International Clinical Trials Registry Platform.

Novartis posts information about every confirmatory clinical trial it is conducting around the world within 21 days of initiation, including information about trial design, except in cases where serious intellectual property and proprietary issues necessitate a delay in disclosure of specific parts of that information.

We provide information about all trials being conducted, except for exploratory studies that do not generate evidence of safety or efficacy and observational studies that do not test a particular hypothesis resulting in statistical data. Every clinical trial where patients are receiving treatment on the basis of an established protocol is shared on both the company and global registries.
