An industry-leading effort
Novartis is an industry leader in anti-counterfeiting efforts. We investigate every reported counterfeiting case involving Novartis products. We maintain a global intelligence effort to identify, seize and destroy counterfeit Novartis products, and to identify and prosecute criminals responsible for the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit drugs.
We continuously monitor and seek to improve the security of our own distribution channels, as well as the security of our product packaging, using new technologies and techniques to more quickly identify counterfeits and track them through the supply chain.
We continuously apprise our global operations about the dangers and complexities of counterfeiting and educate our associates about these efforts.
We participate actively in anti-counterfeiting efforts with industry groups and public health agencies. Following the World Health Organization's (WHO) call for an international campaign to combat the growing epidemic of counterfeit drugs in February 2006, Novartis endorsed the WHO's Declaration of Rome on Counterfeiting Medicines. We are actively participating in the WHO's International Medical Products Anti-counterfeiting Task Force (IMPACT). In the critical area of legislation, IMPACT has developed guiding principles that national institutions can use as a reference to develop legislation to combat counterfeit medical products.
We maintain an ongoing dialogue and coordinate activities with national regulatory and law enforcement officials about the public health risks of counterfeit products, training local officials to recognize problems and combat them.
We also help governments develop and implement stronger laws, better enforcement and more severe penalties, while enhancing public information efforts against counterfeiters.
Novartis deploys a team of highly trained, experienced security professionals to investigate cases and deter illegal activities on a global basis. We are a founding member of the Pharmaceutical Security Institute, the industry's law enforcement liaison and intelligence association, created in 1996. Our chief security officer sits on its board. We are also a member of the anti-counterfeiting working groups of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.
