Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD)
The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development works to improve the quality of life of poor people in developing countries.
It creates and implements innovative strategies to fight poverty, social inequity and disease through three areas of activity:
- Practical project and program work in the health sector
- Think tank activities (research, publications, consultation and information work)
- Dialog and networking activities
By linking these three areas, the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development has made significant contributions to ease life for the poorest of the poor in the developing world for 30 years.
“Our focus has always been on innovation - doing things differently. We try to find best practice, design a pilot program to test the idea and if successful, help expand that model within a country and upscale it by bringing it to other countries as well.”
Professor Klaus Leisinger, President and CEO, Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development
A global struggle
Today, 2.5 billion people live on less than two US dollars a day - and 14 million children die of avoidable diseases every year.
Poverty and health problems are global in nature and more complex than ever - which means that coalitions and partnerships to fight these problems must assume an increasingly important role. Read how more aid can be leveraged to help poor countries.
