Novartis receives Gold Class distinction in sustainability
For the second year in a row, Novartis was awarded the Gold Class distinction by Sustainability Asset Management (SAM), the group that produces the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes.
In 2008, Novartis had been recognized by SAM as the healthcare Super Sector Leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global index tracking the performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide based on economic, environmental and social performance.
The SAM Gold Class distinction is awarded to companies that achieve a total of at least 75% of the overall score or rank up to five percentage points lower relative to the score of their industry’s Super Sector Leader. Of the 27 pharmaceutical companies assessed by SAM, three earned the Gold Class award: Novartis (Super Sector Leader), Novo Nordisk and AstraZeneca.
The 2 500 largest companies in the world, as reflected in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, are invited each year to participate in SAM’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Only the top-scoring 15% of those companies in each of the 57 sectors assessed by SAM are included in the Sustainability Yearbook.
