Novartis regains lead in influential Dow Jones Sustainability Index
- Novartis named 2008 Super Sector Leader in healthcare for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)
- Novartis also tops the DJSI's ranking of the most sustainable pharmaceutical companies worldwide
September 15, 2008 — Novartis has been named the Super Sector Leader among healthcare companies in the 2008 update of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global index tracking the performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide based on economic, environmental and social performance. Already in 2006, Novartis had held the super sector leader position in the index.
The healthcare super sector leader was chosen from 25 companies specializing in one of four areas: pharmaceuticals, medical products, healthcare providers, and biotechnology. In addition, Novartis was ranked the most sustainable pharmaceutical company in the DJSI's industry-specific ranking.
"We are delighted to have been selected, once again, as the healthcare super sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. This achievement recognizes our responsible business approach and our efforts to integrate sustainability in our long-term strategy," said Thomas Wellauer, Head of Corporate Affairs, and Member of the Executive Committee at Novartis. "It demonstrates that Novartis is an innovative, top-performing company that practices the highest standards of corporate responsibility."
The DJSI recognition comes after Ethisphere Magazine named Novartis one of the "World's Most Ethical Companies" in June this year.
Corporate citizenship is an integral part of how Novartis operates and a key to its success. In 2007, the company spent USD 937 million on access-to-medicines programs and research in neglected diseases, reaching 66 million patients. This represented about 2.5% of annual sales.
