Novartis named one of the “World’s most ethical companies”

June 4, 2008 - Novartis was named one of the four most ethical pharma and biotech companies on Ethisphere's 2008 World's Most Ethical Companies list. Ethisphere, a think-tank dedicated to best practices in global governance, business ethics, compliance and corporate responsibility, revealed the award at a joint Ethisphere and Forbes conference, "Driving Profit through Ethical Leadership," held on June 3rd.

After studying over 10,000 of the world's leading companies on six continents, Ethisphere analysts concluded that Novartis is among less than 100 finalists deserving the designation of the "World's Most Ethical Companies." Within the pharma and biotech sector, Novartis, Novozymes, Novo Nordisk and Genzyme were top-ranked.

"We are pleased to see that, again this year, the Ethisphere Institute recognizes our responsible business conduct," said Thomas Wellauer, Head of Corporate Affairs, and Member of the Executive Committee at Novartis. "As a leading healthcare company, Novartis is convinced that integrity and values are key drivers of business success."

The 2008 World's Most Ethical Companies methodology committee was comprised of leading attorneys, government officials and professors. Ethisphere analysts reviewed codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluated investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looked at companies' activities to improve corporate citizenship; studied nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers; and worked with consumer action groups for feedback and rating.

"Novartis is among the companies honored this year because they have developed impressive and meaningful ethical business practices, making them true standouts within their industries." said Alexander Brigham, executive director of Ethisphere Institute. "Novartis goes well beyond legal minimums, opting instead to bring about innovative ideas that contribute to the public well being. By its actions, Novartis is forcing its competitors to follow suit, or fall behind and truly embodying the notion that ethical business practices are more profitable in the long run."
