Managing corporate citizenship

Novartis demonstrates excellence in Corporate Citizenship in Mexico

January 25, 2007 - In the newly published Corporate Citizenship review, "Creating value through responsible business", Novartis describes how it lives up to its commitment to being a responsible citizen of the world. The rationale is simple: by integrating responsible behavior into how we operate, we maintain our “license to operate, innovate and grow.”

Four pillars of corporate citizenship

Corporate citizenship at Novartis rests on four pillars - patients, ethical business conduct, people and communities, and environmental care. Whether it be improving access to medicines for the world's poorest populations, training associates on ethical marketing practices, creating a diverse and inclusive workplace for associates, or minimizing our use of natural resources, the review documents, through facts and examples, how Novartis is “walking the talk” as a good corporate citizen. This is a step toward fulfilling our aspiration of becoming the world's most respected and successful healthcare company.

Commitment to social responsibility

In 2006, Novartis contributed USD 755 million to access to medicines programs around the world, which amounts to five times more than what the Swiss development agency spent on development aid. This contribution reached 33.6 million patients - a little more than the population of Canada. During the same year, Novartis associates worldwide completed more than 218 000 e-learning courses in ethics compliance covering such topics like human rights, ethical marketing practices as well as data protection. Novartis also strengthened its pandemic preparedness plans in order to better protect the health of associates and their families and ensure ongoing supplies of life-saving drugs to patients should a flu pandemic occur.
