Strengthening Novartis reputation in the business world

Novartis has built a strong reputation in the business world since its inception in 1996. This standing is acknowledged by 'The World's Most Respected Companies 2005' list just published in the Financial Times.

November 24, 2005 - 'The World's Most Respected Companies 2005' list reveals that Novartis moved up 19 positions in the overall ranking to number 49, compared to 2004. Only one other healthcare company, Johnson & Johnson, joins Novartis in the top 50 list.

Furthermore, in the accompanying business leaders ranking, Dr. Daniel Vasella, Chairman and CEO of Novartis, moved up 12 positions to number 37 in the top 50 list of "The World's Most Respected Business Leaders". No other healthcare leader appears in this list.

As in the previous eight years, this global survey sought the views of chief executives from publicly-quoted organizations, state-owned enterprises, large subsidiaries and private companies. The central premise of the survey is to identify those companies and business leaders most respected by their peers and the reasons for those choices.

A closer look at the reasons given by CEOs for nominating leaders for the ranking indicates the growing readiness to celebrate visionary thinking and the ability to innovate. Similarly, when both CEOs and fund managers were asked about their criteria for assessing corporate reputations, both groups placed greater emphasis on vision, innovation and strategy in 2005 than in 2004.
