Welcome to Novartis Corporate citizenship

Managing corporate citizenship

Fundamentals

The ideals and values which define the Novartis approach to corporate citizenship and give our associates guidance in their daily work are defined in our Code of Conduct, our Policy on Corporate Citizenship and our five Corporate Citizenship Guidelines. These documents explain the citizenship responsibilities of our associates, covering material areas such as working conditions, business ethics, human rights and the management of third-party relationships. This overarching framework is reinforced by means of policies and guidelines relating to particular business functions - such as the Promotional Practices Policy and Guidelines (NP4) of the Pharmaceuticals Division, which set out clearly what is permissible practice for sales and marketing.

“We do everything we can to operate in a manner that is sustainable: economically, socially, and environmentally - in the best interest of long-term success for our enterprise.”

Novartis Corporate Citizenship Policy

Our Corporate Citizenship Policy, adopted in 2001, reflects the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact. The policy is based on the fundamental rights of every individual, such as the protection of privacy, freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of association and non-discrimination.

The policy also declares our ambition to be a leader in Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) protection, endorses the precautionary principle 'in innovation and development of new products and technologies,' and pledges to integrate the principles of corporate citizenship into our business strategies.

Our Code of Conduct covers such areas as personal obligations and discrimination, conflict of interest, bribes, business entertainment and gifts, insider trading, antitrust, compliance with the law and the use and protection of business assets and information.
