Environmental care

Natural resources

The availability of resources, predominantly energy and fresh water, is becoming constraint and prices in the longer time will increase. Novartis protects the environment and natural resources, such as fresh water and resource materials, and strives to further improve the efficiency of their use.

With regard to energy, we monitor the purchase and use of all types of energy and fuels. Energy use comprises: purchased energy (including electricity, steam and hot water), on-site energy (generated mainly from the combustion of gas, but also other fuels such as oil), and energy from waste and bio-fuels at Novartis sites. On-site energy that is sold to third parties is subtracted. In addition, energy costs are systematically monitored and reported.

With regard to water use, we monitor water streams into and out of our sites, as well as types of water use. Quantities reported for input, use and output should balance. Such balance methodology ensures effective water resource and cost management, and helps to guarantee complete and accurate information.

Novartis uses large amounts of fresh water for non-contact cooling purposes, in particular for fermentation processes and for indoor air conditioning, and this water can be discharged back into the aquatic environment without having a noticeable temperature impact. However, water that has been in contact with process ingredients (contact water), and may therefore need treatment, may have an environmental impact or lead to increased cost, and so receives priority attention.
