Targets 2009-2015

Novartis sets HSE targets covering periods of at least three years to allow better analysis, planning and implementation of programs. Progress towards targets is reviewed annually with each Division and Business Unit, which are also involved in target setting based on recommendations by functional experts.
HSE performance data – as required for management purposes as well as external reporting in line with international guidelines such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) – is collected, validated and consolidated with the Novartis HSE Data Management System. Systems and processes are reviewed by third parties – in addition to Corporate and Divisional HSE audits – to ensure compliance with legal and Novartis HSE standards. Such processes support local sites in increasing the completeness and accuracy of their performance data.

For the coming years, the following targets have been defined on Group level:

  • VOC halogenated: decrease to 220 tons in 2009 and reduce to 200t by 2010
  • VOC non-halogenated: decrease to 1,550 tons by 2009 and to 1,500 tons by 2010
  • Energy efficiency improvement: 10% by 2010, based on 2006 data
  • Contact water efficiency improvement: 10% by 2010, based on 2005 level
  • Intensity of hazardous waste not recycled by 10% by 2012
  • Intensity of non-hazardous waste not recycled by 20% by 2012
  • CO2 from vehicles: decrease 10% by 2010, based on 2005 level
  • On-site scope 1 GHG emissions from Operations, including carbon off-sets: decrease 5% below 1990 level by 2012
  • Lost Time Injury and Illness Rate (LTIR): reduce to 0.31 in 2009.
  • Total Recordable Case Rate (TRCR): reduce by 10% based on 2008 level
  • Lost Time Accident Rate: in 2008, the Lost Time Accident Rate has been replaced by the Lost-Time Injury and Illness Rate (LTIR), a measure of employment-related injuries and illnesses with lost time per 200 000 hours worked. The mid-term (2012) target is 0.2 and the objective for 2009 is to reduce LTIR to 0.31.

Furthermore, the following goals are being pursued throughout the Group:

  • Behavior Based Safety Programs to be initiated at all major Novartis sites as of 2008
  • Waste minimization programs in all divisions
  • Business Continuity Management Program fully implemented worldwide
  • Risk reduction measures initiated and Business Continuity Plans established for all remaining risks (according to Risk Portfolios)
  • Implementation and Testing of Pandemic Preparedness Program
  • Novartis Emergency Management: Implementation of programs on Division/Business Unit levels as well as all smaller units.

In 2008, Novartis achieved its global target of eliminating organic hazardous waste to landfill. Therefore, this is no longer included in our targets. However, monitoring of waste destination will continue using our data management system.
