Production

Novartis monitors and reports total production as the total weight of all products delivered from manufacturing facilities. Total production covers all types of products, including chemical and fermentation products, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms, as well as consumer health products such as contact lenses, over-the-counter medication and animal health products.

The Business Units of the Consumer Health Division use total production as the denominator for indicator ratios, such as energy, water, greenhouse gas emission and waste intensities, and for the respective efficiency improvement indices.

Total production for 2007 was 169kt (168kt for 2006; 166kt for 2005). The different Divisions produced the following amounts: Pharma (26kt), Vaccines & Diagnostics (0.4kt). Sandoz (90kt) and Consumer Health (52kt).

A total of 29 Novartis production facilities (Pharma 12, Sandoz 15) and one research facility have ISO14 001 or EMAS certification for their environmental management systems. In addition, 20 sites (Sandoz 12 , Pharma 8, Animal Health 1) have OHSAS 18 001 certification; five more than in 2006. ISO /EMAS certifications cover more than 85% of the Pharma and Sandoz production capacity, while OHSAS certifications cover 45% of Pharma and 65% of Sandoz production (in terms of production amounts from certified sites).
