Novartis monitors and reports total production as the total weight of all products delivered from manufacturing facilities. Total production covers all types of products, including chemical and fermentation products, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms, as well as consumer health products such as contact lenses, over-the-counter medication and animal health products.
Total production for 2008 was 162kt (171kt for 2007; 169kt for 2006). The different Divisions produced the following amounts: Pharma (27kt), Vaccines & Diagnostics (0.3kt), Sandoz (87kt), and Consumer Health (48kt).
A total of 32 Novartis production facilities (Pharma 12, Sandoz 15, Vaccines & Diagnostics 4, Animal Health 1) and one research facility have ISO14001 or EMAS certification for their environmental management systems; three more than in 2007. In addition, 24 sites (Sandoz 13 , Pharma 8, Vaccines & Diagnostics 2, Animal Health 1) have OHSAS 18001 certification; four more than in 2007. ISO /EMAS certifications cover approximately 79% of the Pharma and 81% of Sandoz production capacity, while OHSAS certifications cover 47% of Pharma and 63% of Sandoz production (in terms of production amounts from certified sites).
