Ozone depleting substances inventory and emission

In accordance with the requirements of the GRI Guidelines for Sustainability Reporting, Novartis includes inventory and emission of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in its reporting.

 

Performance 2008: ODS inventory and emission (in t)

For 2008, Novartis sites globally reported a total inventory of approximately 90t of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS), compared to 92t in 2007. The 2008 figure includes approximately 3t of the CFC/HCFC mixture R502, 80t of HCFC R22 refrigerants, and 7t of Halons. Existing CFC and HCFC inventories are continually exchanged with HFCs, mixtures with lower ODS factors, or with ammonia.

Emissions in 2008 caused by ODS losses from installations, reported in tons of R11-equivalents, were calculated for the Group at approximately 304kg (269kg in 2007);ODS included in Novartis products are nil (0.6t in 2007).
