Ozone depleting substances inventory and emission

In accordance with the requirements of the GRI Guidelines for Sustainability Reporting, Novartis includes inventory and emission of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in its reporting.

 

Performance 2007: ODS inventory and emission (in t)

For 2007, Novartis sites globally reported a total of approximately 98t of ODS, compared to 87t in 2006. The 2007 figure includes approximately 4t of the CFC/HCFC mixture R502, 87t of HCFC R22 refrigerants, and 7t of Halons. Existing CFC and HCFC inventories are continually exchanged with HFCs, mixtures with lower ODS factors, or with ammonia.

Emissions in 2007 caused by ODS losses from installations, reported in tons of R11-equivalents, were calculated for the Group at approximately 238kg (379kg in 2006); Novartis therefore has ODS emissions below the target value of 1000kg of R11-equivalents. ODS included in Novartis products totaled approximately 0.6t (1.3t in 2006), primarily HCFC R22.
