Non-hazardous wastes reported are mixed or household waste, packaging waste, compostable waste and inert waste.
Total amounts in 2007 were 70kt (69kt in 2006), 29kt or 41% of which were recycled. Other disposal routes are: treatment (27%) incineration (15%) and disposal in landfills (17%).
Non-hazardous waste targets and outlook
Keeping non-hazardous wastes to a minimum and recycling as much as possible is a constant challenge. Novartis makes ongoing efforts in all areas to minimize non-hazardous waste generated at its operations globally. Waste segregation programs are being installed at many sites, which allow better use of recycling routes for materials such as paper, cardboard, glass and plastics, for example from packaging, offices, and production processes.
